Are You a Prospect to Be Hit by Panic Disorder?

By: Robert Thomson

If a person taking a walk through the bushes has a sudden close encounter with a venomous snake or some other wild animal, his/her normal respond would be to panic and to escape from the beast as fast as possible.

If these identical feelings of panic and horror come to surface without any real reasons and when they occur in a perfectly secure situation (while walking on the beach or enjoying a football game at the local stadium) you do not have to be an expert to conclude that something is wrong with your health. Experiencing more than one of such episodes in a short time frame (a few weeks or months) can be an indication that the person has developed panic disorder.

At the very early stages the victims become very scared and confused. The non psychological symptoms of panic disorder which might include palpitations, nausea, shortness of breath, dizziness, excessive sweating, jelly legs etc. make the patient to believe that something totally different is going on inside their bodies. Sufferers usually ask for help at the wrong places. They visit a whole army of various medical specialists undergoing numerous checks and tests because they are convinced that the problem is with their heart, lungs, blood pressure and so on. The mental health expert is usually not on their list to visit.

While experiencing the panic attack sufferers could believe that they have some kind of the malignant condition, they are going to die on the spot, going insane or to lose control of themselves. Panic attack can occur every time when the victims find themselves in a particular environment or it can just strike without a visible cause regardless of the circumstances. A big number of patients suffering from panic disorder sometimes develop agoraphobia (fright of wide-open or crowded places from which in a case of panic attack would be hard to flee the scene or to seek and receive help.)

Panic attacks can even hit while sleeping. Hottish weather also plays a role in panic disorder because victims experience more panic attacks during the warm summer days. The main reasons for this are that hot weather accelerates heart beats, induces dizziness and dehydration. Also, during these days people are more likely to spend their time outdoors and therefore have a much bigger chance of running into unacquainted and dreadful situations and places.

Although the real causes of panic disorder are unknown, some studies have shown that certain groups of people are more likely to develop this disorder than the others. This group includes people who are shy by nature and who tend is to be worried and over concerned about every single problem in their lives. They continuously analize their own abilities and are never certain whether they are able to accomplish their goals and responsibilities. The signs of their instability and fears are usually visible from their early years (blushing, sweaty palms, palpitations, feeling uncomfortable in front of older, unknown people or in front of the authoritative figures.) Those kids spend a lot of time daydreaming and imagining things and possess no agonistic spirit and behavior. When they sleep they can also experience nightmares and have accidents with bed wetting. Their perception of other individuals is sort of naive because they cannot observe the hidden intentions of mean people. Even after repetitive and numerous disappointments they do not change their act.

It is essential to state that panic disorder is very common mental health problem in our society. Although individuals that show some of the previously mentioned symptoms in the early stages of their lives are in greater risk of being affected by panic disorder later on in their lives, not everyone will. On the other hand, some very confident individuals that are easygoing and have no apparent difficulties in their lives might be hit by this condition without any warnings or a valid explanation.
