Avoid Common Mistakes Found With Bed & Breakfast Locations

By: Patti Rob

Staying at a bed & breakfast can be a great way to spend your time with someone you care about, or to avoid a common hotel while on a leisurely stay or a business trip. One of the main things people look for in a bed and breakfast is the location of it. They don't want it to be difficult to get to and it needs to be close to the attractions or business they need to access.

Pay close attention to the location of your business because people will be concerned with it. You need it to be easy to access and close to other attractions. If your bed & breakfast is in a small town you may want to offer to provide transportation from the bus or train station. You will be surprised how many towns don't have taxi cabs

Even if you have a small budget you need to find effective ways to advertise your bed & breakfast. Make sure you do it both locally and globally as you never know where your guests will be coming from. There are plenty of different community events where they ask for sponsors so make sure you get your bed & breakfast location mentioned in them.

Have you ever left a hotel and decided you won't be returning because the service was awful? Well, don't let that be an issue with your bed & breakfast. People expect quality customer service so you have to be willing to offer it. The fact that you operate a lovely bed & breakfast and that the food it terrific will be overshadowed by poor customer service. Be very selective about the people you hire to represent your business.

The customer service you do offer needs to be very genuine. Guests need to feel comfortable approaching with any questions, concerns, or needs they may have while staying at your bed & breakfast. Make sure you communicate with them when they arrive and assure them they can come to the staff for anything they need. Make sure someone is readily available to assist them should they need it.

Offering quality customer service means you will need to be available or have other staff available at all times. Go out of your way to offer customers what they need and they will remember it. If you don't have good communication skills though you may find it a struggle to operate a profitable bed & breakfast location.

If you aren't familiar with how other bed & breakfast locations operate you should try to stay in several of them before you open your own. Pay attention to how they greet their guests and the various services they provide. Chances are you will find plenty of good information to use in your own business. By exposing yourself to the issues that aren't being met for guests at bed & breakfast locations you can be sure to fill in those gaps with yours.

Operating a successful bed & breakfast can be difficult at times, but knowing what issues you may face will help you stay on top of them. In order for your business to thrive instead of fail you have to pay close attention to the many different areas of the business. Offering clean rooms and great food is only a small portion of what it takes to have a successful bed & breakfast.
