CDL Driving School Will Fast Track Your Carrer!

By: Nat Bronson

Never before, the CDL driving school has such an important role to play in training new truck drivers for the nation's transport industry. The current nationwide demand for skilled drivers for light and heavy trucks is high, based on the Federal Government Occupational Handbook, and since much of the inland distribution of goods is done through trucking companies, it is highly likely that truck drivers will continue to be assured of job security and so does the CDL driving schools. The potential for growth is also quite good.

It is imperative that all drivers for commercial motor vehicles that weigh above 26,001 lbs should have obtained a CDL, (Commercial Driver's License) since the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 were enforced. In an attempt to enhance highway safety the drivers for those vehicles that are categorized as commercial heavy weight motor vehicles such as track trailers, tow trucks and most buses and trucks are obliged to retain a CDL.

The skills expected from the drivers to obtain a CDL are elevated as imposed by the Federal Government. To qualify for a CDL and simultaneously add to their credit, drivers prefer to approach an accredited CDL driving school. It is imperative to understand the specialization of the CDL driving schools before opting to join one.

There are variations in the training programs offered by the CDL schools. Additionally the quality in training, the equipment standard, student truck ratio, training charges, job assurance and so on has to be analyzed before choosing one. Essentially there are three types of driver schools; Private schools, Public institutions and motor carriers.

A private CDL driving school is operated for profit and owned by private business entities. Profit being the objective, these schools ensures business benefits by providing high standards of training. Since the charges are comparatively high, these schools are expected to exhibit quality output. Failure to meet the standards by compromising on quality would result in bad reputation and gradually the business bears loss. Therefore Private CDL driving schools offer competitive standards of skill development programs and utmost safety. The private CDL driving schools are licensed and regulated by the state government that enforces laws and regulations to govern such schools.

Private CDL driving schools will probably be more accommodating for special needs. The public funded driving class has driving training programs that typically last longer although there may be the same or fewer training sessions. The good thing about such programs however is its relatively lower costs involved as it is subsidized.

Motor carrier training is motivated by churning out the most drivers in the shortest period of time as possible, and is more an on-the-job training than a truck driving school. It focuses on providing the truck driver training that will actually put a driver behind the wheels of a truck and not much else, just enough to pass the CDL test. Such training can be very risky because it does not thoroughly prepare a driver for the many factors that makes heavy vehicle operation riskier than lighter vehicles.

It is mandatory that the potential student seeking for the best CDL driving school investigate if the program offered by the school is certified by PTDI (Professional Truck Driver Institution). PTDI certification states that the driving school formulates high standards and facilitates extensive training to the students. One such specification is that at least 44 hours of training must be provided during the training program. This may be one of the requirements when a better job is expected with a standard company. The choice of the best CDL driving school is to be determined only after careful evaluation of these factors.
