CDL Schools - Important Selection Tips!

By: Nat Bronson

CDL, also known as Commercial Drivers license is a must for any truck driver that wants to operate large vehicles with over 26,000 lbs of tonnage or carry dangerous materials. This requirement was put into by the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 and its main target is to promote safety when driving large vehicles. This way, a lot of driving schools have transformed into CDL schools in order to prepare students to obtain the CDL license.

Recent surveys made ordered by American Truckers Association have revealed that a truck driver can earn up to $35000 annually. Truck driving is very important to distribution of any products and there is an increase of truck drivers needed every day. Is seems that at this day over 8 million people have benefited from Commercial Drivers License schools.

There are some standards and regulations for training programmes for all CDL schools. Hence, the CDL schools are expected to follow them and design their training package accordingly including any variations as desired by their federal and state government. These schools can be private, college based or company sponsored ones.

You can get an idea of the approved CDL schools in your area via your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. Moreover, the training programs need to meet some standards (minimum training hours, on-hands practical etc.) in order to be approved by the Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI). Therefore, you can look out for schools approved by PTDI; a faster and effective method. If in case, you have a chance of being employed by an employer only if you join the school of the employer's choice; hence that school would be the best.

Some aspects when choosing the right driving school for you must be taken into consideration. For first you must be aware about what can a CDL school provide you in terms of orientation, fees, refundable fees, etc. As there is a very large demand of truck drivers all around there are some experienced drivers that compete for the best job so, when you choose one of the driving schools it's more reliable to be enrolled in a school that has connections to a big truck driving company. These can provide jobs for the new-entry graduates and also can provide a bigger attention to a becoming truck driver.

The need to search for good CDL schools can not be underestimated, for they not only equip you with the knowledge to clear the CDL permit tests, but you also gain a lot in terms of road safety and rules, driving ethics, handling and operating of the vehicles in any road condition and dangerous situations, and their maintenance etc. They in fact equip you to be a full fledged driver.

Good CDL schools will not only provide the minimum training and knowledge required to pass the CDL licensing tests but sufficient hands-on and theoretical know-how pertaining to rules of the road, good driving manners, defensive driving, safety precautions and procedures, basic maintenance skills and tricks to handling large vehicles. Responsible CDL school instructors will engage their students in real-life situations to prepare them for scenarios that may require quick reactions and decision-making.

CDL schools are much more than a way to get a CDL. Because professional drivers will spend a large part of their working life in a truck, it is in their best interest to select a training program that will ensure such a life is a prolonged life. Trucks, buses and tractor-trailers are much more difficult to drive than smaller vehicles, and parking is just one of them. Most truck drivers go on the long haul so it is important that they are sufficiently trained to cope with difficult and stressful situations without losing their nerve. While rules and regulations exist to promote safety on the road, ultimately it is the nut behind the wheel that determines this.
