Chipped But Not Broken - A New Twist in Glass Art

Designs are first sand-carved, then layers of glass are selectively removed in various patterns appropriate to the subject. The final steps include metallizing and/or selectively coloring portions of the design and applying multiple coats of sealant. Silver is the current choice of metals, producing a highly reflective surface which accentuates the dimensional qualities of the design. Although the basic processes used are well established, Mr. Tutone has perfected variations and a unique synthesis which produces rather surrealistic images.

As Mr. Tutone explained, either the front or backside of the glass can be designed, with the latter producing the most dramatic results. Subjects for the designs are focused primarily on organic elements and abstracts. The backgrounds can be mirrored, colored or clear. Originally using only silver, he is now exploring the use of other metals and combinations with color. To compliment the unique visual qualities of his works, Mr. Tutone is reluctant to use traditional framing, preferring to surface-mount his pieces or project them from the wall using stand-offs. Because of the nature of the techniques used, it is impossible to achieve the exact same effects twice, making each piece truly one of a kind. All pieces are signed and dated, with average production time requiring about one week. As Mr. Tutone explained, glass is a very unforgiving medium, and the slightest mistake will usually require a complete start-over, depending on the stage of completion.

In addition to MirralsTM, Mr. Tutone also designs and produces a unique line of wall and vanity mirrors which, again, break with the tradition of conventional framing to create artistic works in their own right. All of his designs can be produced to customers’ specifications and modifications, and can incorporate MirralsTM elements to create truly functional art.
