Freight - The Wonderful World of Freight

By: Frank Dunne

There is huge scope and opportunity right now in the freight and shipping world. More than ever, it seems that the young people are taking to careers in shipping and brokerage. Of course, with the expansion of world economy, the activity of shipping is now bigger than it ever has been.

Freight is a word applied to describe the transfer of goods and is normally a commercial operation. Items are ordinarily set up into various shipment classes before they are shipped.

This is dependent on a lot of factors:

The type of item being sent, i.e. a kettle would usually be put into the family 'household goods'.

- Numbers and sizes of objects to be shipped.

- How long will it take to arrive at the destination.

- Shipments are ordinarily noted as household goods, express, parcel, and freight items.

Furniture, artwork, or like Items are by and large sorted as household goods.

The majority of personal and small business items, including envelopes are classed as "overnight express" or "express letter items". Usually weighing less than a few pounds they almost always get delivered in the carriers packaging. The shipper determines the level of shipping at the appropriate time.

Depending on the service levels chosen, an envelope for example can travel overnight or could take days to get to it's destination. Avaition is nearly always used for Express goods to speed delivery.

Parcel or ground dispatches is the name given to bigger items such as small boxes. Weighing less than 50Kg, and with no single item over 35Kg. Boxing is the normal choice for these shipments, sometimes the shipper does this and at other times the carrier provides the boxes.

Service levels are again varying; but just about all ground consignments will move around 500-700 miles per day, going seashore to coast in around four days depending on origin. Parcel payloads do not usually move by air, and ordinarily move thru road and rail. Parcels constitute the absolute majority of business-to-consumer (B2C) loads.

Aside from Household goods and Parcels, the next catagories are described as "freight".

1. The first class is Less-than-truckload or LTL freight:

LTL, Less-than-truckload generally means a 28 foot trailer used to capacity or less. Packaging and size requirements are similar for LTL shipments and air cargo. LTL represents the majority of freight shipments.

2. The next catagory is (TL) Truckload:

Anything larger than 15,000 pounds will be classed Truckload (TL) in the United States of America. The most economical way to ship this size is on it's own truck rather than sharing, like the LTL shipments.

80,000 pounds is the maximum weight that a truckload TL can be legally. That is the weight including the weight of the tractor trailer. Huge savings in shipment costs can be made by large companies by taking advantage of TL shipping, and it is very common to see these nowdays, and it appears to be increasing. Under the current U.S. truck pricing model, adding more to a load costs nothing more.

Schemes for increasing load size include precise calculation of the load within the equipment specifications. This is predominantly done by taking demand from, for example, a Distribution Resource Planning system or a Vendor Managed Inventory system. When sending freight, it is highly significant to realize the facts about pricing, claims, and insurance.

Freight pricing:

LTL rates are quoted per 100 pounds or cwt or per hundred weight. Besides the discount off of base rate created by the freight class, there is typically a second discount applied to the calculated transportation rate.

More dense items such as steel and machinery have low classifications such as Class 50 thru 85. Fragile or bulky items fall into freight classes 125 to 500, and pay higher shipment costs.

Liftgate, residential pickup/delivery, inside pickup/delivery or notifications/appointments charges can also be minimised by picking up deliveries at the carriers terminals.
