Handicap Needs And Your Bed & Breakfast

By: Patti Rob

Depending on the regulations in your area, you may have no choice but to make your bed & breakfast handicap accessible. If it is optional, then you want to take care of it anyway. If you already own a bed & breakfast, you may need to invest in some upgrades. These can be costly but you should be able to find a way to cover the expenses if you have some corporate credit in place.

This is likely something you didn't thing of initially though. If you are still in the planning stages of your bed & breakfast business, try to incorporate these concepts into the place you purchase. You definitely want to make sure it offers rooms for guests both upstairs and downstairs. If you already have your bed & breakfast location, you may have to invest in some changes.

For those still looking at locations, you will want to examine the entryways. Is it going to be possible to get a full sized wheelchair to fit through them? You don't want someone to come to your bed & breakfast and then be restricted because of this. There are all sizes of wheelchairs out there and many of them are compact. If you offer enough room for a full sized wheelchair then everyone should be able to fit without any problems.

If you aren't sure what elements of the bed & breakfast to consider, get some help from those with disabilities. They are definitely experts in the field and can give you excellent advice. You will also find a handful of organizations out there that will conduct a free evaluation for you. They are very dedicated to serving those with disabilities so you will be proud of your efforts.

You will also need to make plenty of consideration for the outside of the bed & breakfast. You need to make it very comfortable for those who come to stay in your establishment. The first thing they are going to look for is a ramp that will allow them to gain access to your bed & breakfast.

Since many people enjoy being outdoors, your bed & breakfast needs to accommodate this as well. Having a wheelchair ramp for them to access the front ramp won't be enough. It is a very good place to start though. Make sure they can also access the other areas that you have to offer including a garden or a porch area is important.

It is going to be to your advantage to offer a quality bed & breakfast that is handicap accessible. Even your guests that aren't in a wheelchair are going to like not having to climb stairs if they have bad knees. They may know someone else that does need the extra accessibility though.

Paying attention to the needs of those with disabilities can help you build a solid reputation as one of the best bed & breakfasts out there. Meeting the needs of all your consumers is vital to your continued success. While many individuals with disabilities definitely do have special needs, as a business owner you should be up to that challenge.
