Make Filing your Income Taxes a Breeze

By: Robert Bain

Get ready for your taxes if you haven't already filed them as that deadline of April 15th will arrive before you know it. Too many people feel that tax preparation is exhausting so they drag it out as long as they possibly can. Yet you can change your behavior as well as your perspective on how the process goes.

Keep a file to put items for your tax return in all year long. Even a large envelope can help you keep things in order. Put in receipts for donations and other items so you know where they are at the end of the year. It also prevents you from forgetting about things you can use as a deduction on your return.

There are new deductions being added all the time so try to stay on top of them. The forms are all designed to walk you though what you may be eligible for. There are specific notes on the workbooks that even tell you the eligibility criteria and what forms to use to take such deductions. You want to do all you can to lower the amount of tax you owe but you also want to do it legally.

Even though the date for the tax return in April 15th, you don't want to wait until April 12th to start working on it. That is just too much pressure hanging over your head to get the thing done. Should you realize you are missing pertinent information at this point you aren't going to have much luck gathering it that fast either.

How are you going to file your tax return this year? Do you sit down with all the forms you need and calculate everything manually? Do you use a software program on your computer that asks you questions and you fill in the answers? Do you take all of your information to a professional to complete for you? There is no right or wrong way to file your taxes so do what is best for your situation.

Before you begin working on it though you need to verify all the information. Incorrect amounts on your information from the employer or other reporting agency can really affect your tax return. Mistakes have been known to be found so be on the look out for them. You should be tracking your own income as well so you can report anything you don't get written verification for.

Some people put off filing their income tax because they owe money. If you do and you can pay it in full then do so. If you can't cover the amount due file your return anyway. Contact the IRS to see how they can work with you on the payments. They try to offer an option for every situation but you won't know until you look into it.

For those that are getting a tax refund, it doesn't mean you can just run out there and buy what you see. Think about your current financial situation and be responsible with that money. Apply it to reduce account balances and to ensure you are able to have very good credit into the future.
