Mastermind groups are very powerful and easy to run

By: Lanny Morton

Having a mastermind group creates an atmosphere of support and success that is hard to duplicate. These people become a great support system. It's like having your own personal board of directors dedicated to your success.

An ideal number of people to start a mastermind group is 10-12. Invariably, a few flake out and don't commit the time and usually its because they don't want to get out of their comfort zone. Also, over time, people move or leave town.

Mastermind groups work best when done at the same place and same time every week. People are creatures of habit and when they get in the habit of showing up at the same time, it works best.

The ideal place to hold a mastermind group is free of distractions. Attempt to avoid crying babies, phones ringing and other background noise so the group can focus on the meeting. Library conference rooms are really good.

The first meeting should give an overview of what the process is all about. Your mastermind group should have rules to be followed, such as, no cell phones, must be on time and must show up.

I recommend starting the mastermind group with a 10 week study on the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. This book really lays a great foundation of principals of success. We have had incredible success with groups using this book and creating amazing results.

Meetings should be no shorter than 90 minutes and no longer than an hour and a half. Participation by everyone in the group is key to getting good, diverse ideas out. Don't let one person dominate the conversation.

The more you give, the more you get. Each person should come to the meeting with a spirit of giving. It makes it so you have 10-12 people giving to you in your life at all times. Be about other people and the value you create will be tremendous.
