Microsoft had successfully shipped 60 million copies of Vista

The latest operating system from Microsoft was well close to beating pre-release expectations, being sold in over 60 million copies.

Kevin Turner, Microsoft COO, made this discolosure during the annual meeting of financial analysts. He also said that the company was looking to ship a billion copies to retailers, consumers, and PC manufacturers in the next 12 months.

These numbers shows that Vista was a success for Microsoft, Turner said in the first five weeks in the market, it had already surpasses the total number of apple installations. Microsoft has claimed shipment of 20 million Vista copies in the first month, and 40 million in the first 100 days.

Microsoft officials also announced that the sales of Vista and Office helped boost revenues to $50 billion, first time in history for the company. Vista and XP contributed with $15 billion in 2007, with $2 billion higher than 2006.

The popularity for Vista comes from enhanced security features. Turner said this was substantiated by a 21% drop in calls to customer care centers at the time of Vista’s release, compared to the number of calls at the time XP was released.

This is happening now, but after virus makers will focus on the new operating system, vista users will have hard time dealing with trojans.
