Motor Vehicle Accidents: Killing Thousands Worldwide

By: Priscilla Demby

Motor vehicle accidents are invariable caused by the driver's negligent driving of a motor vehicle. Motor vehicles fall under two broad categories - Light Motor Vehicles (LMV) and Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV).

There are different categories for motor vehicle accidents as well. These accidents can be categorized as a car colliding into another car, a car colliding with a human or a car crashing into an object or a precipice, among others.

And the numbers associated with each of these are staggering enough for people to recognize that motor vehicle accidents are increasingly turning out to be a headache across the world, resulting in many governments taking serious action to reduce them.

Why do Most Motor Vehicle Accidents Happen?

* One major cause of motor vehicle accidents is over-speeding of the vehicle. In some cases, the accident is caused when a car goes over the prescribed speed limit. In most roads in the USA, there are speed limits that are strictly implemented at all times.

* Cases of Motor Vehicle Accidents are also reported due to a driver being drunk. If a person in an inebriated state drives a car, he may in all probability not have full control of the car's motion. Such drivers cause car crashes which could easily result in fatalities.

* Every motor vehicle is made up of parts like brakes, accelerator, fuel pumps etc. Malfunctioning of one of these parts may also result in a car crash or car accident.

Some statistics on Motor Vehicle Accident for you

These numbers on Motor Vehicle Accidents may come as an unpleasant surprise to you. According to statistics, there are around 1,000 car accidents in the United States in a day. Statistics also show that in two car accidents, occupants of light cars such as the Honda, BMW, and the like can survive death around 92 to 94% of the time. This means that 6% of the time, a two car accident results in death. This comes around to 60 fatalities a day because of motor vehicle accidents.

How does the law step in?

Most national governments have stepped in and laid down the law regarding motor vehicle accidents. When this happens, the person responsible for the accident is required to stop driving immediately. He is also required to hand in the papers of the car and his insurance papers to the police, FBI or any other law enforcement officer present at the scene. When found guilty, the driver may be sentenced to jail or is asked to pay a penalty.

Driving safely is the best way to prevent vehicle accidents. Car manufacturers have done their best to comply with safety standards but the thing to remember is still this: "Drive Slowly, Reach safely."
