In the history of fashion, almost everything is derivative. What starts out on the runway is quickly homogenized into something more suitable for everyday life, or at least for special occasions. It isn’t hard to find jewelry that looks dated, gaudy, or just plain hideous. Like clothing, jewelry can be understated, overstated, garish or obscene, and what might seem like a good idea at the time can be a regretted purchase later on. Of course, playing it safe isn’t always the best option, but more often than not, being conservative when purchasing jewelry will result in a collection of items that stands the test of time and is suitable for almost all types of events or occasions. Pearls are the best example of making a wise choice when purchasing jewelry.

Pearls are beautiful from the moment they’re cultivated, and unlike gold, silver or diamonds, are not manipulated by the tastes of others. Of course, the settings can vary, but most pearl jewelry is designed to accentuate the pearl itself. This leaves very little room for interpretation, or more accurately, designer faux pas. Of course, as with gem stones, pearls have also occasionally suffered from those whose idea of culture is on par with yogurt, but more often than not, pearls retain their dignity in almost any setting.

Perhaps that’s why pearls are considered the smartest of accessories. It’s hard to go wrong with something that can’t be cut, pressed, cast or molded into shape. Best of all, pearls are one of the few types of jewelry that are able to truly stand the test of time, without becoming dated or obsolete.
