Polarized sunglasses

By: WM

Many people find direct sunlight too bright to be comfortable. Also when you're skiing of flying there is a lot of sunlight that goes into your eyes. Many people wear sunglasses because of that. Sunglasses can help to dim the light that goes into your eye. After a while sunglasses became fashion, everyone wore them in different kinds of colors and sizes. Especially at the beach sunglasses were popular. Also film actors and celebrities wear big sunglasses to mask their identity.

Sunglasses also provide protection for your eyes agains UV (ultraviolet) rays. In the European Union the CE identifies sunglasses fulfilling quality regulations.

Almost all lenses are colored or darkened. The color of the lenses vary a lot but the most common colors are green, grey and brown. This is because these colors doesn't disturb the sight that much. Grey lenses are neutral because they don't improve the contrast nor the sights of colors. Red lenses are good for situations with little or no light, because they improve the contrast. Orange and yellow sunglasses have the greatest contrast improvement and the best depth view, but the colors are bad with those sunglasses.

There are also polarized sunglasses.

Polaroid sunglasses have a UV filter and a polarization filter. So the light that enters your eye only exists of vertically polarized light.

The advantage of filtering the horizontally polarized light has to do with the reflection of light. If light shines on water, a part of that light will be reflected and another part will be absorbed. The number of the light that is reflected depends on the angle of the light that falls in.
