Searching For The Best Desktop Wallpaper

By: Subpic

Art galleries
A good rating system requires many non-experts voting or a small dedicated group doing the job. Usually if there are too many pictures you can't have them all rated by just a few guys. This implies the creation of a community with the purpose of rating pictures. The point is, there usually is a community that votes for the pictures. These users are no experts. That produces a subjective component in the voting process. This signifies that there is lower in-depth examination of the picture before rating it. Usually pictures are presented in small sizes (thumbnails). Because of this and the shorter time spent on deciding the rating, the pictures get voted based on their small sizes only. Good looking small sizes don't make for beautiful full sizes. That's a significant problem with sites containing many images.
There are many picture directories/gallery sites, community reviewed mainly, like the ones described above. The most popular of these, that also have a good ranking in-place are presented in figure 1. See the end of the article for the link. All characteristics have been established based on the "top ratings" listing on each of the sites. After thoughful consideration, the best wallpaper site among the mentioned is deviantart.com. You won't always find images in the best sizes but at least you get a nice experience from watching beautiful art-works.
To summarise, the main problem with gallery sites is poor quality rating of larger sized pictures. This becomes more visible when there are fewer reviews for an art-work. It happens especially on flickr.com. Here there is no all-time ranking available. A picture gets most of its votes on the day it is published.

Search engines
Another place that one could try searching for pictures is Google. A query here returns satisfactory results for text searches. It doesn't happen the same way with images. The general question is: why wouldn't image search stand up to google's fame? Here's a short explanation for this.
Search engines index large amounts of pictures. They indeed return sufficiently relevant results for keywords you search for. But, that's not the real problem, it's the rating (ranking method). PageRank, what Google uses, might work well for text based web-pages, but when it comes to pictures things change. A highly ranked page may have pictures on it for various purposes. Most of them are not displayed for their beauty.

Wallpaper sites
These don't have that many pictures compared to the previously mentioned sites. The wallpapers here are not ranked as best as they could because there are a lot less users. Another problem with wallpaper sites is the lack of diversity and low abundance. The main advantage is the resolutions available. This type of sites have usually the largest sizes for the pictures displayed.

Any wallpaper source has its trade-offs. You cannot find keyword relevant, good quality, diverse and perfect sized images all in one place. But, in many cases, a specific combination of these features will do. The type of sites that provide the most features are large public galleries like the ones at deviantart and flickr.
