Swimsuit Contest As Hot As Ever!

By: Sam Curtis

Whether you are in favour of the swimsuit contest, or think that they represent a gross exploitation of women, the fact remains that they are hugely successful in promotional or fund raising activities. Organizers of these events will argue that the swimsuit contest allows for the judging of physical fitness, poise and posture.

The swimsuit contest has become as synonymous with the American way of life as the humble apple pie. They are often held as a stand alone contest where beautiful women are judged solely on their physical appearance. They are also often held as part of a much larger competition where the swimsuit contest will make up a set percentage of the contestant's overall score.

The critics of the swimsuit contest have always held the view that these events degrade and objectify women. Not only this, they believe that such contests send out the wrong message to all young girls. This is that beauty is by far the single most important asset any female can have.

In a world where sex and beauty sells as never before, it is easy to see why the swimsuit contest has so many enemies. Eating and emotional disorders are just two of the many problems our young girls are facing often because of low self esteem. Perfect bodies and Hollywood good looks are the exception in our society and should not be used as a yardstick in determining one's self worth.

Unfortunately a lot of controversy remains over the swimsuit contest particularly in our major pageants such as Miss America or Miss Universe. Interestingly the swimsuit contest now only contributes 15% to the contestant's score in Miss America. Talent and the private interview section of the contest now rates far more on the judge's scorecard. The swimsuit contest is in fact rated as second lowest to the onstage questions which are only considered to be worth 5% of the total score.

Because of the continuing public outcry over swimsuit contests in the major beauty pageants, a phone poll was organised to determine just how the public felt on this issue. An overwhelming 87% of people interviewed were in favour of keeping the swimsuit contests going.

The swimsuit contest has been responsible for launching many careers in the fashion industry. Swimsuit models are now regarded as professional career women and paid accordingly. The contests have proven to be an ideal launching pad for many hopeful models.

The swimsuit contest has been around for close to a century now, and even though it is now generally accepted in Western countries it still receives much criticism. Originally it was totally forbidden by the middle class who saw it as a manifestation of low moral values. Its acceptance was however enhanced greatly during the Second World War, when beauty queens were recruited to entertain the troops and to promote the sale of American bonds.
