The Health of High Fiber Cereals

By: Gilda Desai

The thought of eating a high fiber cereal makes some people cringe. In the past many high fiber cereals had no flavor and were often describes as eating chopped up cardboard. In recent years the health industry has done many studies which have shown great benefits to eating whole grains and a high fiber diet.

With these studies at the forefront of the health food industry, other cereal producers have gone to great lengths to join in the production of whole grain, high fiber cereals. This has been a very positive thing, because nowadays there's a high fiber cereal that appeals to every taste imaginable. The highest fiber cereals still have some taste issues but there are many cereals with adequately high fiber that have great taste.

The most fiber can be found in the bran type cereals. Cereals such as Fiber One, All Bran, and 100% Bran are some of the highest in fiber. For those who prefer a better taste, there are lower, but adequate, fiber products such as Kashi, Raisin Bran, and Grape Nuts. The best way to compare products and find the best fiber is to read the product labels.

Comparing any cereal to one of the total bran cereals will help identify how much fiber a person is truly getting. Not all high fiber products are alike, even though the pictures on the box might give the impression of high fiber content. By comparing product labels you can get the real truth about the product.

If you cannot find a cereal product that you like in the store, you can always make your own. You simply mix different cereals. You can add taste to high fiber cereals by adding in some of the more tasty, but lower fiber cereal products. Fruit and nuts can add a lot of flavor to a high fiber cereal.

You can eat healthy more consistently if you're also enjoying your food. Dried fruits like apricots and raisins have good fiber content themselves. Adding nuts to your cereal will also increase the fiber content. With a little creativity you can enjoy a very healthy and tasty breakfast.
