Used Cars Dealer Will Not Always Win With You!

By: Alex Baltimore

It's very difficult to negotiate a good deal from a used cars dealer, and unfortunately a great many people are simply ripped off. These dealers are experts. Maybe if you bought as many cars as they sold, then you too would become an expert buyer and be able to win on all your deals.

You don't think the way a used cars dealer does. For him, transacting used autos is how he makes living. Giving in to your haggling means less of the commission money ending up in his pocket. For you, it's all about trying to get the best price you think is fair. But, lacking some serious argument you'll probably accept what a used cars dealer is offering you. Besides, how often are you learning anything about used cars? Very rarely, unless you're a car buff, for whom cars in any shape and size are the daily topic.

It is important that when you go looking at used cars, you go prepared. Any used cars dealer worth his salt will be able to tell immediately if you have done your homework or not. Buying a used car is serious business, and not just a matter of visiting the nearest dealer showroom and picking the prettiest looking car at the right price. Unless you want to become the owner of something totally unsuitable, then this is simply not the way to go.

Entering a used cars dealer's office without knowing at least roughly, what type of auto you want to acquire, exposes you to his clever selling tactics. In the end, don't be surprised if you end up with an automobile that is highly overpriced, and worse still, doesn't fit your lifestyle needs.

Decide your motoring needs and expectations before you approach a used cars dealer. Not only will it make your job of selecting the best matching auto easier; but, you'll gain dealer's respect by at least looking well prepared. Besides, it's not too difficult to work out the size of engine, number of seats, upper price limit of the car you want.

It's a good practice to take a car mechanic or just a friend who is familiar with major issues of the most popular models. Having somebody with you when negotiating with a used cars dealer, will help you to stay your ground, rather than being impressed by a fast talking salesman.

Before contacting any used cars dealer, try to gather as much info about the make of the car you want. Discuss the matter of functionality with those who are going to use the car with you. After all, you don't want to buy a sporty model that will have only a bench seat at the rear, while you need to transport 3 children to school, every day. Issues of safety should be paramount on your mind.

How can you get one better with a used cars dealer? Simple. Know what you want, and how much you're prepared to pay for the used car you've in mind. You'd be surprised to know, how many prospective buyers don't have a clue what's the going market price is for a used 1995 Toyota Supra is. Do you know how to get almost as good, as a used cars dealer? Try to learn as much as you can, about the car you want. In other words, when you enter the car lounge you need to know what's good and bad about a particular model. How popular it is, and what's its current asking price. To acquire all this knowledge you don't have to study Blue Book, or read classified ads for months. Just concentrate on it for a week or so. Better still, visit a few car yards, and see what they are asking.

If one dealer will not make you a good offer it is very comforting to know that you have a fall back offer, and can tell them you can get a better deal down the road. Finally, be prepared to wait. Doing deals in a hurry will always hurt you financially!
