Warehouse Management Software Makes Real Time Inventory Control A Reality

By: Kingston J. Amadan

Warehouse Management Software Makes Real Time Inventory Control A Reality.

One of the biggest problems associated with warehouse and distribution management stems from inventory control, or more specifically, the inability to accurately assess stock levels across multiple locations. The problem is as age old as robbing Peter to pay Paul, but in this case, it’s paying Paul without realizing that the payment was already allocated to Peter.

The main focus of warehouse management software suites is to provide accurate data across multiple parameters. From stock levels and logistics to forecasting and field sales, a centralized database where all the information on company assets is compiled and available would appear to solve the problem. Unfortunately, products don’t move at the speed of data entry and instead move at the speed of business, which can leave much to be desired from a warehouse management system unable to record movement in real time.

A network that offers real time updating is necessary for many businesses, especially those with warehouses in different locations. The complexities of accurate stock management between warehouses can and often do lead to the inability to deliver or at the very least, delays in shipping. This can be especially problematic for businesses that have sales personnel in the field, especially when they are reporting in on an infrequent basis.

To solve these issues, some warehouse management software solutions have incorporated network scanning devices that update stock levels in real time at various points along the supply chain. Whether at the warehouse location itself, with the sales personnel or both, the advantage is clear. Real time updating of stock levels eliminate inaccuracies provided the system data is sound from the onset. While software won’t physically check stock levels. It’s also much easier to make corrections when input errors are made. Though it may be little solace for the customer who didn’t a prompt delivery, it can keep mistakes of this nature at a minimum and prevent them from happening in the future.

Businesses who rely on warehouse management software suites and have issues with multi-location inventory tracking would do well to upgrade their systems and take advantage of the real time capabilities that the latest software solutions can provide. In addition to other features that can help a business grow, accurate inventory management can mean the difference between superior customer service and customer loss.
