Ways To Prepare Your Restaurant For Children

By: Patricia Farnham

You have probably seen families out to eat together in various restaurants. You may have noticed that it takes place more often in some restaurants than others. This is because parents quickly discover which restaurants are designed well for families to enjoy a meal together and which ones are a nightmare. Since families often do go out to eat for a celebration or to accommodate their schedule, restaurant owner's really need to pay attention to what their needs are.

Eating out with small children isn't always easy for parent but it can be done. As a parent with three children, I can tell you it is frustrating when I enter a restaurant that doesn't seem to be very kid friendly. It makes me uneasy and chances are I won't go back. There are some great ones in our area but when we travel I have to learn from experience along the way. Simple things that the restaurant can offer really do make a difference for parents.

The quality of your staff is definitely a huge factor when it comes to making the establishment family friendly. You will be amazed at how many waitresses don't realize that a family of five sitting down to eat needs more than one napkin apiece! Paying attention to such details is always appreciated by the customers. You will want to offer drink cups with lids for children as well. Otherwise you better expect to be cleaning up spills and replacing drinks for them on a regular basis.

The first thing many parents notice when they sit down in a restaurant is the menu. They will scan it to see if there are any selections for children on it. The cost of their dining experience may double if they have to buy their children full meals which you would think is going to increase your profits. Yet it will cost you them returning as it is too expensive for them. Offer some good choices for children and you will have a very family friendly menu.

Don't forget to offer additional children's meals for older children too. This is a category that too many restaurants seem to over look. This is an age group from about 6-11 that eat more than a typical child's meal but less than an adult portion. Likewise, if your restaurant is buffet style then offer a discounted price for children based on their age

Children often get impatient when they are waiting for food, so offer something fun for them to do. It doesn't cost very much to offer a place mat with a few games or a coloring page with crayons. Parents will be able to relax as they wait for their food because their children will be entertained with these activities. Some restaurants offer games on the table to where you jump pegs over each other or you create things out of links. These types of games offer a fun way for the whole family to spend time together while they wait for their food.

Make sure you offer plenty of accommodations for children when it comes to seating as well. Booster seats are the perfect way for smaller children to be high enough to reach the table. You also need to have plenty of high chairs available to meet the demand for them during peak business hours. Make sure each of the high chairs is in good condition and has safety buckles that work so the child isn't at risk of getting hurt.

If you want to keep parents happy enough to keep coming to your restaurant then you need to offer them a great establishment for their children. Once a person becomes a parent they have too many other issues to concern themselves with when it comes to eating out. The food is no longer the main focus even though they still want a terrific meal at an affordable price. They always want an establishment that allows them to enjoy it with their children
