Website Content Management - An Overview

By: George Purdy

Website content management is essentially a web based application that allows you to create and manage HTML content. In this respect, website content management (WCMS) applications are a type of content management system (CMS). WCMS can be used to control and manage a huge and ever-changing amount of web content. Web content management systems differ from traditional content management software because they include features making it easier to publish web content to web sites.

CMS helps with content creation and its control and editing. It also facilitates many other essential web-maintenance functions. Often the software has a tool package which is designed to help novice users with little to no computer language programming skills to effectively manage the content. CMS are mainly utilized as a way of interactive use by potentially a large group of contributors.

Website content management systems are designed to have many functions. These include storing, verifying, and publishing documentation for specific uses and industries. Such a content management system will usually support multimedia materials and documents. It can identify the content management roles of key personnel, and make it easier to assign responsibilities to employees. It also makes it easier to manage and track multiple versions of documents.

The system uses a database to store content, metadata, or artifacts that might be needed. Often content is stored as XML, although this is not universal, to facilitate reuse and enable flexible options for presentations. The content is presented to regular website visitors based on a set of templates. Those templates are often XSLT files and administration is typically done through browser-based interfaces, but a fat client is used by some systems.

The system contains content that is easy to edit. Once the content is separated from the visual presentation of the site it generally is much more easily edited and manipulated. Its feature sets are also scalable, and it has standard upgrades, as well as management of work flow and documents.

One way this software operates is to put each user in a box containing a virtual collection of the necessary files. Thus all of the changes made by all of the users to several interdependent files can be compiled and viewed before being released upon the world.

This is clearly helpful in ecommerce since businesses will be able to vary their products marketing in whatever ways they choose to do so. It also comes in handy for education facilities because they will be able to change things on their website without consulting a professional.

Website content management consists, basically, of a system for web applications that create and manage HTML content on websites. It is a content management software system (or CMS). A web content management system is actually a content management system that has extra features that are used for easing web content publishing to web sites. It is very helpful in ecommerce allowing business people to readily change the content of their websites in order to meet their changing marketing requirements. Likewise, it is a great tool for education enabling schools and universities to edit their website’s content without consulting a professional web designer.
