Work As A Photographer

By: Jack Devlin

Photography is considered as one of the rare hobbies that you can easily learn, and if you can take good photos you might consider turning your hobby into a business. Although there are numerous jobs in photography one option to make money and enjoy your work is to become a photographer. One of the ways for beginner photographers to reap rewards financially and get recognized for their works is to put up the photographs for sale. Photography as a source of income even as an amateur is still possible as there is always a market for all kinds of photographs, be it black and white or color. Major national magazines normally give the best rates for photographs. However, they are also the most difficult client to get because of the high amount of competition from full time and freelance professionals who send in their photographs every now and then.

Do not lose hope. There are still a lot of regional magazines and newspaper companies which welcome prints for publication. The minimum credit is a line with your name to a maximun payout of a few hundred dollars. You can call up the various companies and enquire about their guidelines to submit your photographs for publication.

You can earn more if your photos are bought for advertisements. Advertisement photos have more payout than editorial ones. Advertisement photography as a source of income is a very good choice. However, more paperwork are involved as any subjects feature in your photographs has to sign a release form to avoid any lawsuits incurred from featuring these subjects.

If you have any intention of going into the professional industry, you can read magazines for professionals which feature special interests of professional photographers. You can also start from taking portraits photography. In this case, you can upgrade your photography skills and at the same time, cover your cost of batteries and prints with the money you earn. Until you develop confidence in your work and proficiency in your camera skills, make sure that your subjects do not have too high expectations to the results you can deliver.

Make known your charges to your subjects before you start snapping away. Let them know the payment methods and when you do you expect to be paid. You have to be clear about these points because they are usually in a hurry to see the photos, but in no hurry to pay up.

Most of the times, the stimulants to a photographer is the money and recognition of the works produced. Photography as a source of income is a huge motivation to professional photographers. To become one, practice is the key word. The more you do, the better you will become. Start producing photographs, and make better ones all the time. Most importantly, enjoy the process of photography.
