Succeeding Online - A Simple Internet Business Model

Wednesday 16 April 2008 @ 7:04 am

With the myriad forms of information on starting a business on the internet, there’s simply too much in the way of software, marketing tips and gadgets and gizmos for your website to know where to begin. In addition, you’ve got to manage yourself, your time, your emotions and your energy. Here’s some ideas for starting an internet business.

Coming up with a profitable business idea. Finding your niche is a first hurdle for many. The balance must be struck between something you have a great knowledge about and something that a huge target market is very hungry for. You don’t have to set aside days, weeks and month for market research by any stretch of the imagination. If you can identify a niche where people are searching and buying or competitors are paying decent amounts for google advertising say you may well be on to a winner.

Building a website. Being able to do basic webmaster tasks is an asset, for example, adding pages, being able to refine menu systems and how to set up your site on the net. Providing high quality content to your visitors is going to make them more likely to want to buy something from you either there and then or on a revisit to your site.

Thirdly, you can start finding ways to make your site as “sticky” as possible; the marketing side. First up adding a signup form and having an ezine you can keep in touch with prospects is a must. Many internet marketers stipulate “the money is in the list. After you’ve built a list, either from natural traffic to your site, or selling a budget item on ebay; for example, you can start a forum or message board and start a sort of community which drives your presence through the addition of user-oriented content.

Your product must be something people will really really want. A starter product would be an ebook that you sell through your site that has excellent info in it. You must differentiate from the crowd and decide to provide the best ebook on the subject there is. This will help create leads for further selling of higher end products, and you will be increasing cash flow of the business and generating loyal customers.

Converting a visitor in to an ezine subscriber does not mean you have a passport to send a barrage of sales messages. Better to give them value in a content based ezine and announcement list, with subtle sales emails once a week or so. You can also gain repeat visitors to your website by reminding them that your website is there, or informing them you have a new blog or forum that they can get amazing information from, for free! An internet business can be very prospect driven. Your job is to effectively create satisfied, paying customers out of visitors to your website who are willing to buy more from you.

Prospects and prospects who are buyers can be marketed to about the higher end products and services you are providing. You can also leverage these people to help you to get more traffic, by encouraging them to use a tell-a-friend script, to spread the word about your site, or by giving them user-driven content experiences such as an interactive forum, messages board or some other feature to allow participation by your people. Traffic techniques to start out with include using search engine optimisation on your site, generating backlinks from other sites, directories and blogs, social bookmarking and article submission to article directories and ezine publishers.

Separate Your Home Business From Family Time

Wednesday 16 April 2008 @ 7:04 am

Often, because we work from home, our families seem to forget that we are working. You are after all, right in the next room so it seems logical for you to be the one to go to in most situations as somebody needs a question answered, a dispute resolved or any of the thousands of things that can interrupt our work. Each interruption by itself is probably so significant, but add these up throughout the day, week and month and it can really add up.

With each interruption we have to stop what we are doing, shift our focus onto dealing with whatever it is that caused the interruption, taking care of it and then upon returning to our desk, we have to attempt to shift our focus back onto the task at hand, remember exactly what is was that we were doing and at what stage of the project we were at and then get back to it, that is, until the next interruption. With each interruption we lose our momentum which is especially important when doing repetitive tasks. You may have noticed that when stopping these types of tasks for something that it takes a moment to get back into the “swing of things”.

If you are finding yourself continuously interrupted during the day for minor things then it may be time for you to have a discussion with your family and explain to them that even though you are in the next room, you are still at work and your time must be treated as importantly as if you were working for someone else.

A few things that can help your family member adjust to this.

1. Create a work schedule and post it on the refrigerator. This way everyone knows when they are able to approach you with minor questions and needs. Of course they need to know that emergencies do not apply to that and address what you consider to be emergencies and how to respond to those separately. The great thing about this method is that you are your own boss, so depending on your families ages and needs you can easily create a schedule that can fit yours and their needs. For example your work schedule could have a break scheduled for the top of every hour if required, or if your children are older, you could go with a more conventional, breaks at 10, 12 and 3.

2. Explain to them that even though you do not leave the house, you are working. This is a great time to explain work ethics, the importance of self motivation, initiative, responsibility and time management. Let them know that their waiting for your scheduled breaks to approach you about minor things really helps you to accomplish your goals. Make them feel important for being able to contribute in that way.

3. Give your children things to occupy their time between your breaks. This is especially important for younger children. We do not want to turn the televisions or gaming systems into babysitters. Plan their day just as you do your own and post their schedule on the refrigerator next to yours. You can find plenty of activities of children of any age either at your local bookstore, the public library or online. For example, their schedule might have “coloring” from 8-9 and then “reading” from 9-10 followed by a break at 10 which you can enjoy together.

The important thing is that your family know and respect your “work” time. Let them know that by your focusing on being more productive during your scheduled work hours with interruption, you will have more time to spend with them in the long run because you won’t be working so late trying to catch up from all the interruptions throughout the day.

How to Develop An Idea for A Home Internet Business

Wednesday 16 April 2008 @ 6:04 am

If you have been thinking about starting a home internet business whether full-time or part-time then you know there are lots of options. Here is a plan to help you get started.

Sometimes all the options can cause you to stall. There are many options out there to choose from. Many of the home internet business options are excellent options.

What I suggest is that you pick one. Yes I know it might seem difficult but let me share with you a formula you can use.

Pick a home business in an area of your interest. If you are going to be building a home business full time you should enjoy what you are doing. If you are building a home business part-time you should enjoy doing it. Why? Because it’s always easy to put off what we don’t like and go do something we enjoy.

If you are still having trouble deciding at least narrow it to one or two subject areas. For example, if you like sports narrow down your options to running and/or swimming. These may not be your choices but the example is given to help you get more specific in your area of interest. From this interest we will develop ideas for you business.

Once you have narrowed your chose to a specific subject it’s time to do some keyword research. If you are not sure what keyword research is here is the basic idea. Keyword research is looking for words or phrases that people use when searching the internet. An example – I’m interested in finding a free clown photo for a flyer for my kids. I go to Google and type in “free clown picture”.

The results are what Google returned for my keyword “free clown picture”. Now a smart website owner wanting to promote free clown pictures would have done keyword research and positioned his website so I would come to their site. This is the ultimate end result of good keyword research; Getting interested people to your home internet business website.

You want your keyword research to bring people to your site. Let’s use the example of “running” for our keyword research. There are lots of areas within the area of running that we could use to begin building a home business with the internet.

Go to http://inventory.overture.com/ or http://www.nichebot.com/ and type in running. These sites will give you other ideas for areas within this category that you could use to start your home internet business. Use the results as ideas for products or more specific information you want to provide to your future customers.

After performing a search on running I came up with a couple ideas. Running Apparel, Running Shoes, Running Club and trail running were some ideas I got from five minutes of research.

From that research you might decide that you want your home business to promote running shoes. But you really don’t want to handle product or stock lots of shoes.

If you don’t’ want to stock merchandize then you can become an affiliate for companies that sell what you are interested in. An Affiliate is someone that promotes the stores item or items and receives a percentage of the sale.

There are many people on the internet making running a home business promoting products as affiliates.

Do a search in your favorite search engine for running shoe affiliate for example. I found a couple places that let you promote their products. Another idea is to search using this phrase - “affiliate program” shoes – I found several additional options with that search.

What can you do with this information? Build a website that offers lots of useful information about running shoes. Place ads for the products you are promoting as an affiliate throughout your website.

People love information and if you provide good information they are likely to visit your site and purchase items via your affiliate links while benefiting from the information you have supplied them. Help your visitors and they will help you.

Of course there is more to starting a home business but if you don’t get specific with your idea it’s hard to move forward. Just go through the above steps with your own ideas. Be creative and enjoy the process.
